Bay window shutters: which style works best and why?
Bay windows are one of the most classic features of British homes, especially here in Oxford, where they appear on everything from Victorian terraces to grander period properties. Shutters are often the best way to dress this feature well, but with a few different styles to choose from, it helps to know what sets each one apart before you commit to one.
Why bay windows need a different approach
Curtains can work in a bay window, but they’re rarely the best fit. Fabric can bunch awkwardly around the angles, and you’re generally left with just two options, either open or closed. Shutters solve this properly. Panels can be opened individually or the louvres simply tilted, so you get far more control over light and privacy in a space that’s often more exposed to the street than a standard window. This is particularly important if your bay looks straight out onto the pavement.
Full height shutters for bay windows
Full height shutters cover the whole window in one continuous panel, giving a clean, classic look that suits period homes particularly well. They’re a great choice if you want maximum light control across the entire window and a timeless finish that won’t date, and they’re available across our full range of shutter materials.
Café style shutters for bay windows
Café style shutters cover just the lower portion of the window, leaving the top open to natural light. This style works well in bay windows facing the street, since it offers privacy at eye level while still letting light flood in higher up the room. You can find out more about our café style shutters if this sounds like the right choice for your home.
Tier-on-tier shutters for bay windows
Tier-on-tier shutters split the window into two independently operating sections, top and bottom. This gives you the most flexibility of the three styles, as you can open the top for light while keeping the bottom closed for privacy, or adjust each side of a bay independently to suit the sun as it moves across the room throughout the day.
Getting the fit right
Bay windows come in all shapes, from gentle splay bays to sharper square angles, and most have three or more sides to account for. We offer standard 90 degree and 135 degree bay frames, along with a fully custom bay frame for anything non-standard, so the fit is precise whichever style you choose. Hidden hinges are also available if you’d prefer a neater finish, so the hinges don’t show where panels meet at the corner posts.
Choosing your material
Whichever style you go for, material affects both the look and the practicality of your shutters. Our entry-level Antigua range uses high quality MDF, while Bermuda combines ABS louvres with an MDF frame for a lightweight yet durable option. For a more premium feel, our hardwood ranges offer a different character and finish altogether.
Our shutters are manufactured at an ISO accredited factory in China, and we’re fully upfront about that, because the quality control behind the product matters far more than where it’s made. The same rigorous quality management standards recognised internationally are applied throughout production, and we work closely with our supplier to make sure every set of shutters that reaches Oxfordshire meets the standard we expect.
Built to last
Every shutter we install comes with a 5-year warranty, and our team, including Rupert, Debbie and Luke in the office and Nigel on fitting, has over 20 years of experience in the shutter industry between them. From your first home consultation, complete with samples you can see and feel, through to the final fit, you’ll always be dealing with a member of our team rather than a call centre.
